Red

Yesterday morning I saw a picture on Instagram that reminded me of a tiny little story I wrote last year as part of the ‘100 days project.’ The photo was posted by @voguemagazine and shows an art installation by Yayoi Kusama. It’s included below.

Here’s the story.

“Jelly on a plate! Jelly on a plate! Wibble wobble wibble wobble, jelly on a plate!”

The little girl finished her solo and delivered a large spoonful of gelatinised sugar into her mouth. She looked around the table, her cheeks expanding and contracting as she liquidised the substance. Everyone had at least a quarter of an eye on her. Perfect!

She stuck out her chin, barred her teeth and sent rich, red droplets showering across the white table top.

“Jelly on a plate! Jelly on a plate!”

The chorus was immediately taken up with high-pitched squeals and bright, wide eyes.

Soon, the entire table was covered with a layer of sugary, red gelatin. Sticky red hands dived into bowls of jelly-covered m&ms. Red-stained pop corn was squished into mouths that gaped like open wounds. Red splatters consumed clothes, carpet and consciences. Debauchery in full, fantastic swing. A spirit of true, unadulterated anarchy.

Not everyone, though, was intoxicated by red.

In the next room a pair of pale lips anxiously sipped a glass of pinot and two un-sugared ears tried their best to paint the screaming as white noise.

A pair of tired eyes fixed themselves on the mantlepiece where a series of birthday cards were proudly displayed. As they pondered these, a hand was lifted up and fingers expanded one by one. Four, five, six more parties, probably, until a new dining suite could be purchased.
